Bayern Munich made their first competitive appearance of 2026 at a bitterly cold Allianz Arena this afternoon, taking on VfL Wolfsburg. Vincent Kompany’s men encountered no troubles as they coasted to an emphatic 8-1 victory and extend their Bundesliga lead.
Despite the sub-zero temperatures in Bavaria, the groundsmen maintained a perfect surface for Bayern to take flight inside 5 minutes. Luis Díaz’s cross from the left took a flick off Moritz Jenz which caught Kilian Fischer by surprise as the ball deflected into his own net.
The concession of an early goal at the Allianz Arena can often spell trouble for visitors, but Wolfsburg hit back seven minutes later. A pass from Koulierakis found Lovro Majer who slipped in Munich native Dženan Pejčinović to fizz his low shot past Manuel Neuer.
Further half-chances fell the way of the Autostadt club as Christian Eriksen and Majer blazed wide from range. However, the reigning Bundesliga champions regained the lead on the half-hour – Michael Olise picked out Díaz in the box, finishing with a powerful header.
Kamil Grabara was all that stood between Vincent Kompany’s men extending their advantage before the break. The Polish shot-stopper kept Lennart Karl at bay before producing a fine save with his boot to divert another effort from the lively Díaz.
After the break, the Bavarian giants eventually showed their ruthless streak with Olise to the fore as they netted two in a flash after the 50th-minute. The Frenchman cut in from the left, jinked past two challenges and whipped it inside the left post beyond Grabara’s reach.
A second Wolfsburg own-goal in the next significant attack put the game to bed. Olise, running riot at this stage, found the byline and reversed it in the hope of finding Díaz. Ultimately, Jenz got to it first but paid the price of turning the ball into his own net.
An unusually quiet Harry Kane finally burst to life with just over 20 minutes remaining. The English marksman set up Raphaël Guerreiro for a tap-in before netting seconds later – the 32-year-old curled a delightful shot around Jenz and in off the crossbar and upright.
Bayern piled more misery on Daniel Bauer’s side as the scoreboard read 7-1 on 76 minutes. The Franco-Colombian connection of Diaz and Olise combined on the counter again. This time the latter finished with his weaker right foot before being replaced.
With the damage done, Kompany gave rare minutes to young Wisdom Mike and debutante Felipe Chavez. Still, there was time for an eight Bayern goal as Tah fed Leon Goretzka. The midfielder profited from a nick off Grabara’s forearm which sent it to the net.
