Oliver Kahn fires back at Lothar Matthäus criticism

Lothar Matthäus criticised Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic for the increase of player salaries during their time at Bayern Munich. Kahn responded by explaining his role on Twitter/X.

Two exceptional former players – but also two big egos: Lothar Matthäus and Oliver Kahn didn‘t always look eye to eye. Many years after their player career the two Bayern Munich icons crossed path again – criticism followed.

„They [Kahn and Salihamidzic] did not invest the money from the club well. They just put a lot of cash into new players, new coaches and eventually into getting rid of them – and now the people at the club have to clean up their mess“, said Matthäus to Sport Bild.

Kahn did not want to stay quiet after those direct accusations by Matthäus and responded on his personal Twitter/X account:

„During my time at the club, all financial decisions had to be agreed on by the whole board. In COVID-times, Bayern Munich were on of only few clubs that could gather a profit. Additionally, we broke the sales record of the club in the 2022/23 season. Player salaries were far too low in comparison to other top Champions League clubs and the increases were fairly adjusted.“

Kahn and Salihamidzic were both let go of the club at the end of the 2022/23 season. Since then, Kahn has often commented on his time at Bayern Munich and also on other people who criticised him and Salihamidzic for any mistakes in that period.

Kahn ended his response by calling Matthäus the „eternal expert“ who „doesn’t seem to have the right contacts and information for his analysis“. Whether it was as players or in other positions – those two personalities will always have something to talk about.
