Ornstein confirms Man Utd interest in top Chelsea target

Manchester United are discussing whether or not to make a loan approach for Mathys Tel, according to David Ornstein.

The Frenchman is in the midst of a tumultuous January transfer window. At the start of the month, Tel reaffirmed his commitment to Bayern Munich after a clear-the-air talk with head coach Vincent Kompany in which the latter vowed to use him more often.

Tel has massively struggled for minutes in recent times and the presence of star striker Harry Kane has meant that when he has played, he had to feature on the wing where he has seldom looked comfortable.

The striker’s stance was tested early on in the window when Chelsea made an enquiry into his availability but Tel remained reluctant to leave Munich. However, after being overlooked by Kompany again in the past few games, the striker has now warmed to a move.

In fact, Fabrizio Romano has gone so far as to guarantee that Tel will leave Bayern either permanently or on loan before the window shuts and the teenager has no shortage of suitors.

Man Utd make Tel enquiry

Chelsea retain their interests but Tel reportedly has reservations about joining them as he is looking for consistent game time. Over the past 24 hours, more clubs have enquired about him, including Man Utd and Tottenham.

Both David Ornstein of The Athletic and Romano have now confirmed that Man Utd are attentive to the situation and could look to make a loan offer for the Frenchman.

However, so far, Man Utd have not made a final decision and this potential transfer is still in its infancy. Contact with Tel’s camp has already been made, though there have been no talks with Bayern to date.

Man Utd are first and foremost prioritising possible exits to free up the necessary funds for incomings. Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu is expected to become the club’s first January signing.
