Liverpool remain intent on keeping Mohamed Salah for the duration of his contract, according to David Ornstein.

The Egyptian is currently on Merseyside while the rest of the team is in Milan ahead of a crunch Champions League clash with Inter. Salah was omitted from Liverpool’s travelling party after his outburst following Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Leeds.

Salah, who was a substitute for the third consecutive game, accused the club of “throwing him under the bus” and claimed that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had broken down.

Speaking on Monday, Slot admitted that Salah’s comments had surprised him. While he insisted that there is a way back for the 33-year-old, he made sure to emphasise that the club legend has to deal with the consequences of his actions.

Shortly after Slot’s press conference, Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher went on the offensive and accused Salah of trying to cause “maximum damage” to the club, who have yet to make a decision on whether to include him in the matchday squad for Saturday’s game with Brighton.

Salah wants out, Liverpool want him to stay

During his rant on Saturday, Salah hinted that the game at the weekend could be his last for Liverpool. He will travel to the Africa Cup of Nations after the fixture and only return when the transfer window is open.

According to TEAMtalk, Salah and his camp want a “mutual contract termination” to allow him to pursue a free transfer away from Liverpool. However, David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that this is unlikely to happen.

He insists that Liverpool do not necessarily see it as a case of being either Slot or Salah. Club bosses continue to fully back the head coach, but at the same time, they have no intention to axe the Egyptian.

“Liverpool are 100 per cent behind him,” Ornstein told NBC of Slot. “There is no doubt in their mind at this point in time over his future. They are backing him to improve the form and continue the success we saw last season wholeheartedly for the time being.

“It’s not to say they don’t believe in Mo Salah either. I think there is some belief that they can resolve this situation. The word I’m getting from around Anfield is that they want him to stay until the end of that [contract in 2027] and they are fully committed to him.”
