David Ornstein has outlined the position that Liverpool find themselves ahead of the transfer window, explaining that much of the Reds’ business will be dictated by the future of Mohamed Salah.

Salah is one of three star players out of contract in the summer along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is poised to leave on a free transfer for Real Madrid.

While there have been rumours that the Egypt star will remain at Anfield, there is no certainty over his position at present, although football transfer news expert Ornstein has indicated that Liverpool are optimistic that they will want to be able to retain the ace.

In turn, this will mean they do not need to invest heavily in another striker, such as Alexander Isak, though he does predict there will be one star forward departing Arne Slot’s outfit in the near future.

Speaking to The Athletic, he said: “They will have multiple options, of course, but I think Liverpool will first want a clearer picture of the Mohamed Salah contract situation, what’s happening with Luiz Diaz and whether Darwin Nunez is definitely leaving.

“They remain confident Salah will renew, Diaz is certainly one to watch given there has still been no new deal and he has plenty of suitors, and there is a decent chance Nunez goes.

“So you can definitely see somebody coming in, but we don’t have many names yet.”

Nunez on his way out

While Salah has fuelled Liverpool’s inevitable Premier League title with 27 goals and 17 assists, Nunez has only served to disappoint this term.

The Uruguay international has failed to live up to his club-record transfer signing of €85 million from Benfica.

Slot appears less confident that the chaotic striker will come good than predecessor Jurgen Klopp, so it appears increasingly likely that Nunez will leave.
