Vincent Kompany was a satisfied man after Bayern Munich’s commanding 6-1 victory over Atalanta Bergamo in the Champions League round of 16 match (first leg). Speaking after the match, the Bayern coach praised both the result and the way his team executed their game plan.
“Of course I’m satisfied,” Kompany said. “This is the performance we wanted. We could have even scored one or two more goals. Our plan worked well today.”
Bayern dominated the match from start to finish, producing a relentless attacking display that overwhelmed the Italian side. Kompany believes the performance was no surprise given the quality and mentality within his squad.
“We have a lot of talent and quality in this team,” he explained. “The boys love games like this. The intensity in our training is very high, and that helps us find good solutions in matches like this. So this performance doesn’t surprise me.”
Despite the impressive result, Bayern were forced to deal with several injury scares during the game, including Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. Kompany, however, preferred not to go into too much detail about the situation.
“I won’t say too much about the injuries,” he said. “We must not lose our momentum. We have great confidence in our squad. Phonzy will miss some time, but hopefully not too long. With the squad depth we have, we will manage.”
The Bayern coach also pointed out that injuries are a natural part of the game.
“In general, it’s normal that players sometimes get injured,” Kompany added. “Jamal’s body language after the game was very good, and that’s something I always pay attention to. We’ll see how things develop.”
Kompany also revealed that Harry Kane was close to making an appearance after returning from injury, but the flow of the game made it unnecessary.
“Kane was close to coming on,” he said with a laugh. “But when the score was 5–0, he suddenly became very far away from entering the game. Today we didn’t need him.”
Finally, Kompany refused to discuss the late yellow cards shown to some of his players, instead insisting his focus remains solely on Bayern’s performance.
“I don’t talk about yellow cards,” he said. “That’s not a topic for me. The only topic for me is our game.”
