Paris Saint-Germain have enough of an advantage in Ligue 1 that Sunday’s result might likely won’t define their campaign. However ahead of the resumption of the Champions League, Luis Enrique has work to do after a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Brest.
Things started so well for the Parisian club, taking a 2-0 lead in the first-half, which seemed likely to continue the team’s strong recent form which has seen them rise to the top of the French top flight.
However, defensive lapses and a lack of concentration cost the defending champions dearly as they would go on to surrender their lead and only leave Sunday’s match with a 2-2 draw.
PSG got off to a perfect start
Goals from Marco Asensio and Randal Kolo-Muani in the first-half gave the hosts what appeared to be a comfortable lead.
Asensio’s strike came in the 38th minute of play when he placed a perfect shot into the bottom right corner of the net, however much of the credit goes to Bradley Barcola who provided the assist with an excellent lofted pass.
Kolo-Muani then added his strike a few moments later when the French striker was quickest to a rebound and was able to poke the ball into the net.
Things started to go wrong for PSG after the break, with Brest being allowed back into the game. Mahdi Camara picked up the ball inside the penalty area and lined up a shot towards Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal.
The shot deflected off a defender and it flew past the Italian goalkeeper, giving the visitors renewed hope.
With 10 minutes to go in the second-half Brest drew level. Mathias Pereira Lage scored the equalizer after Martin Satriano passed the ball across the penalty area, creating the perfect chance for his teammate.
PSG couldn’t find another gear to secure a victory, and found their task even more challenging in injury-time when Barcola was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.
Despite Sunday’s setback, PSG still sit atop the Ligue 1 standings with 44 points from 19 games, six clear of Nice, who defeated Metz 1-0 on Saturday.
