Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed that the club have completed an important piece of business by securing the future of Savinho to a new long-term deal.

The Brazilian winger had been heavily linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium in the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur circling. Guardiola even went so far as to line Real Madrid’s Rodrygo up as a replacement.

But with no deal done, City retained the 21-year-old and have tied him down to a new contract.

Asked if Savinho was ready to commit his future to the club, Guardiola replied: “Yeah. We were so clear that we wanted to keep him. It depends on the offer – maybe the offer was not good enough for the club, I don’t know.

“But of course, at his age, last season he played a lot of minutes. He can play on both sides, right and left, and has pace that is unbelievable. So in those terms, he’s ready good.”

Fabrizio Romano had indicated that this deal was in the pipeline and has claimed that it is a six-year agreement that Savinho, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €70.1 million, has signed with the Manchester side.

Guardiola heaps praise on O’Reilly

Man City announced a new deal for Nico O’Reilly last week, and Guardiola also spoke of how impressed he has been by the 20-year-old.

“It’s players like him we want, to make the effort and to stay here longer. I’m really pleased,” the Catalan said.

“Nico is growing a lot. I think since he started to play, we’ve only lost one game – the final of the FA Cup against Crystal Palace.

“He’s helped us a lot, improved in his aggressiveness and in set pieces, with the ball, and yeah, we’re really, really pleased.”

City face Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday before finishing up prior to the international break with a trip to Brentford in the Premier League.
