Pep Guardiola’s time at Manchester City will soon be up, according to his Premier League rivals, who believe that the Catalan will quit at the end of the season.
Rumours have been circulating that this will be Guardiola’s last season in charge of the Etihad club, and The Times reports that his peers in England’s top flight believe that this will be the case.
The manager is under contract until 2027, but is ready to walk away before the end of his agreement.
The report states: “Guardiola’s future is understood to be a burning topic of conversation among many managers and coaches, with one at a leading club having told his executives last week that he is sure the 55-year-old, who arrived at City in 2016, will leave at the end of this season.”
Guardiola has become an iconic figure at Man City, and can count six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the 2023 Champions League among his honours at the club.
Maresca lined up as Guardiola replacement?
Man City have been making plans to replace the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach, with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca thought to be a leading candidate to take over from Guardiola.
Maresca admitted to the Blues that he has held talks with City, where he previously worked as an assistant manager under Guardiola.
Other candidates are also reportedly under consideration, with Xabi Alonso’s sacking at Real Madrid sparking a wave of rumours that he could soon end up in Manchester.
A wide impact
Should Guardiola leave, it will also spark questions over the future of other star players.
In particular, striker Erling Haaland is continually linked with a move to Real Madrid. If the Catalan leaves, it will see speculation over the Norway international ramp up further, while other vital players such as Rodri will also have their plans called into question.
Guardiola’s departure, when it comes, is more than about City losing a manager; it will signal the end of an era and will leave the club at a crossroads.
