  • Wright called the Masters, which Dobey won last year, a ‘Mickey Mouse’ event
  • Some believe that it was between Wright and Dobey for a Premier League slot

Peter Wright has apologised to Chris Dobey after a war of words which saw ‘Snakebite’ describe the Masters as a ‘Mickey Mouse’ event.

Dobey missed out on selection for Premier League Darts, which started on Thursday in Cardiff, with some believing that Wright was lucky to be chosen instead of the 33-year-old from Bedlington, who won the Masters last year.

Wright blasted Dobey in an interview with ITV, claiming ‘Hollywood’ had not yet won a proper major, but ‘Snakebite’ later took to X (formerly Twitter) to apologise.

Wright said: ‘I would like to apologise to Chris Dobey, it wasn’t meant to be a dig at him personally, it was about being picked for the premiere league [sic] and the criticism about being pick over Chris Dobey. Not that I know if it was a choice between us or not.’

ITV’s Chris Mason had claimed to Wright that Dobey should have been preferred to him for the weekly roadshow, which got underway in Wales on Thursday night.

‘Snakebite’ replied that Dobey had not won a proper major, labelling last year’s Masters success ‘Mickey Mouse’.

Wright told Online Darts (via Darts News): ‘It was to shut Chris Mason up saying Chris Dobey should be in the Premier League. What’s he won? He won a Masters, a Mickey Mouse tournament. It’s all he’s won.

‘Has he won a European Championship? Has he won a major? A proper major? No, he hasn’t.

‘Yes, he was a better player last year, but so what. I won two World titles, two World Cups, two European Championships and a Matchplay.’

However, ‘Snakebite’ has since walked back his attack on Dobey, and admitted that there was no proof it was between the two of them for Premier League selection.

Michael Smith won the first of the weekly events by seeing off the local favourite Gerwyn Price in the final showdown in Cardiff.
