Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the Heart of OM's Attack

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the Heart of OM's Attack

In his first season with Marseille, the 34-year-old is entering territory that only Didier Drogba has reached while playing for OM. Aubameyang has scored 27 goals across all competitions for Marseille during the 2023-24 season.

Among OM players in the 21st century, only Drogba, with 32 goals, has surpassed his tally in a single season. The ex-Arsenal star has already scored more goals in a single season than Florian Thauvin (26, 2017-18), Michy Batshuayi (23, 2015-16), and André-Pierre Gignac (23, 2014-15).

This season, Marseille has relied heavily on Aubameyang to carry the bulk of their scoring duties. He’s notched up nine goals more than all of OM’s other strikers combined, totaling 18 goals. Ismaila SarrJordan VeretoutChancel Mbemba, and Jonathan Clauss are all tied for second on the team in goals scored with five.

Aubameyang has played a significant role in nearly half of Marseille’s goals this season, contributing to 49 percent of their total across all competitions, which amounts to 38 goal involvements out of 77 team goals.

The only player with a higher percentage of goal involvement in Europe’s major leagues this season is Ermedin Demirovic for Augsburg, standing at 50 percent.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappé is the only player in Ligue 1 who has more goal involvements (33) than Aubameyang (22) this season. The Marseille star is ahead of players such as Jonathan David (20), Alexandre Lacazette (17), and Romain Del Castillo (16).

The OM goal-scorer is also second only to Mbappé when it comes to goals scored (22), shots taken (99), shots on target (46), and expected goals (17.92). Only two players have been involved in more goals in all competitions this season: Mbappé and Bayern Munich standout Harry Kane (both 53).

Aubameyang’s goal-scoring also follows him internationally as he became the top scorer in the history of the UEFA Europa League with 34 goals. He has already been involved in 13 goals in the competition this season (ten goals, three assists).

Marseille are set to face Atalanta in the first leg of their Europa League semifinal tie this week. If OM aims to reach the final, Aubameyang will need to play a crucial role for the team to provide that goal-scoring threat.
