Alberto Gilardino’s Pisa gave themselves an extremely tough fixture by taking on German giants Bayer Leverkusen, who are just days away from their first official match of the season.

It was therefore not much of a surprise that they were swept aside 3-0 with all the goals in the first half from Robert Andrich on a set play routine, Christian Kofane’s counter-attack and Exequiel Palacios.

The Serie A newcomers tried to fight back, especially after Bayer Leverkusen saw Edmond Tapsoba sent off at the 54th minute, but they were unable to put a dent in the result.

Genoa played out a 1-1 draw against the Japanese university students’ national team.

Ruslan Malinovskyi had put the Grifone in front by converting a penalty, while Lorenzo Colombo rattled the frame of the goal.

Shinoda got the equaliser when a through ball allowed him to spring the offside trap.
