Player ratings: Bayern 1-2 Inter – Lautaro leads the way, Kane falls short

Inter came out on top against Bayern Munich thanks to a late winner from Davide Frattesi, who came off the bench to seal a memorable victory for Simone Inzaghi’s side in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. His strike added to Lautaro Martinez’s opener, just moments after the hosts had drawn level through substitute Thomas Muller.

While the Nerazzurri are only halfway through their task, the character and bravery they displayed in such a hostile atmosphere must now carry over to the domestic stage if they are to avoid further slip-ups.

Best Inter player: Lautaro Martinez – Once again displays immense spirit and self-sacrifice for the team, giving his all despite clearly struggling with a right thigh issue in the first half. Nevertheless, it doesn’t stop him from tracking back to support his teammates and capping off a brilliant team move with a quality finish. While the likes of Nicolò Barella and Davide Frattesi made equally crucial contributions, it was the Nerazzurri captain who led the way.

Lowest Inter rating: Darmian 5.5 – Denzel Dumfries’ absence is sorely felt, as his replacement struggles to cope with the opponents’ pace and intensity, which allow no respite in defence and nullify any offensive contribution. His lack of passing precision further complicates life for Inter, enabling defenders to easily anticipate the strikers and drawing more men into their own half.

Inter coach: Simone Inzaghi 6.5 –Let’s be honest — Inter had their fair share of luck, but they deserve immense credit for making the most of it. Sommer had called on the Nerazzurri to show all their courage at the Allianz Arena, and that’s exactly what they did, responding immediately when Bayern looked set to mount a late comeback.

Best Bayern Munich player: Muller 7 – Made an immediate impact by scoring a temporary equaliser, as if eager to prove his club wrong for deciding to let him go at the end of the season. While his coach insisted the squad didn’t lack experience, the German forward demonstrated he not only brings that quality but also possesses an innate ability to deliver in the biggest moments.

Lowest Bayern Munich rating: Kane 5 – It was inevitably disappointing to see one of Europe’s most praised and in-form strikers fall short when his team needed him most, especially given the number of absences. His lack of precision denied Bayern a lead that could have changed the tie entirely, with Inter’s defence playing a key role in gradually nullifying his presence.

Bayern Munich coach: Vincent Kompany 6 – It’s hard to blame him for a game plan that initially seemed spot on, as his side’s early pressure pinned the Nerazzurri deep into their own box. However, Bayern failed to find a proper response once their opponents began to grow into the game, ultimately paying the price for their missed chances.
