Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Eugen Polanski was under no illusion that TSG Hoffenheim richly deserved their 5-1 win against his side tonight.

“It was a thoroughly deserved victory for Hoffenheim, even by this margin. Our fans were outstanding, while we ourselves played very poorly,” he said in the mixed zone afterwards.

“We knew it would be an extremely intense match. We felt the substitutions would help us bring more strength to the tackle defensively while also allowing us to transition more quickly.

“However, for that to happen, we would have had to defend better and play better football overall. There was too little of what Borussia Mönchengladbach is supposed to be about this evening.

“The best thing was our fans – and the fact that we play again on Saturday and can respond with a different level of quality,” explained the Gladbach coach, looking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Hamburg.
