Premier League cult hero lands new manager’s job seven months after leaving top-flight role

Kevin Nolan has returned to management after being named as the next Northampton Town head coach.

The West Ham legend was previously sacked as Notts County manager six years ago but has now agreed a two-year deal to return to the EFL with Northampton.

The Cobblers have moved quick to appoint Nolan with the club languishing in the League One relegation zone and having parted ways with former boss Jon Brady earlier in the month.

Nolan has been available since leaving the Hammers in May alongside David Moyes after spending four years working as the Scots assistant at the club.

He has been eager to return to the dugout in a chief capacity ever since and now takes over Northampton with the aim of guiding the club away from the third tier’s relegation zone.

Nolan will make his managerial bow for his new employers with a Boxing Day trip to Reading, meaning he will have just a couple of days to get his ideas across to a squad that has won just one league game since October.

‘I am delighted to be appointed the new manager of Northampton Town and I cannot wait to get going,’ said Nolan upon his arrival.

‘We have a busy schedule over the Christmas and New Year period so the challenge is to hit the ground running as best we can.

‘The club has a fine reputation in the game as being a well run club and it is clear it has moved forward on and off the pitch over the last few seasons. 

‘I am proud and honoured to be given the chance to try and continue and develop that work. I believe the squad can make progress up the table and I am determined to repay the faith that the board of directors have shown in me,’ said the 42-year-old. 

Northampton chief executive Kelvin Thomas also hailed Nolan’s decision to take charge at the club, stating: ‘Kevin was very impressive through the process and showed a real desire for the job.

‘He has done well in difficult circumstances in both of his previous managerial jobs and he impressed us with his knowledge, his energy, his experience and his passion. 

‘He showed a real desire and enthusiasm for the role, he couldn’t wait to get started and he has already taken charge of training for the first time.’
