PSG director Luis Campos explains that ‘a set of circumstances’, including salary request, led to Gianluigi Donnarumma’s exit this summer: ‘The star is the club.’

Italy captain Donnarumma joined Manchester City from PSG on deadline day. The ex-Milan star had less than a year left in his contract with PSG.

“The club is more important than anyone. That has changed at PSG,” Campos told RMC.

“Donnarumma’s case was a set of circumstances that led to this decision, as he requested a salary at the level of the old PSG, not the current one.

“Our policy is very tied to merit. You earn more when you deserve it and when you play,” Campos continued.

“We took time to discuss Gigio’s situation. We were forced to find solutions in a case where we couldn’t reach an agreement.”

Contract negotiations between PSG and Donnarumma had begun at the beginning of the 2024-25 season, but didn’t lead to an agreement between the two parties.

The Azzurri captain went on to win the Champions League in Paris last season.

At a press conference from the Italy training ground earlier this month, Donnarumma explained that Luis Enrique told him he’d need to find another club during the pre-season preparations earlier this summer.

“The star is the club, the whole group,” Campos continued, stating that the same rule will apply to other PSG stars.

“The salary policy applies to everyone. The club’s stability will not change because of one player who wants to be different,” the PSG director concluded.

“We are going to protect PSG. We always want to play well and win games. With this policy, everyone understands that the coach doesn’t give you a place based on status or the player’s past. It’s not your past that makes you a starter at PSG. That’s our policy.”

Football Italia understands that Donnarumma will earn €15m in his first season at PSG, but his wages will increase during his five-year stay at the club.
