Paris Saint-Germain begin their Champions League title defense on Wednesday as Atalanta BC travel to the Parc des Princes. After finally capturing the elusive trophy last season with a stunning victory in the final, PSG now kick off the 2025-26 league phase at home against La Dea.

Under Luis Enrique, PSG have entered their greatest era yet. The Spanish manager delivered a domestic double in his debut campaign, then guided his youthful squad to a historic treble last season—clinching Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and, at long last, the Champions League. After a sluggish start, the Parisians grew stronger as the competition progressed, dispatching England’s finest before ruthlessly dismantling Inter Milan in the final to record the largest winning margin ever seen in a Champions League decider. Only a surprise defeat in the revamped Club World Cup final denied them an unprecedented quadruple.

Following a brief summer break, PSG edged Tottenham Hotspur to claim the UEFA Super Cup and have picked up where they left off domestically, opening the new Ligue 1 campaign with back-to-back 1-0 wins before thrashing Toulouse 6-0. Over the weekend, a Bradley Barcola double saw off Lens at the Parc des Princes, where PSG now launch their Champions League defense.

PSG and Atalanta have met only once before, with the French side prevailing 2-1 in the 2020 quarter-finals—a single-leg tie played in Lisbon due to COVID-19. The Parisians will be aiming for a similar result this time around.

That memorable run to the last eight remains Atalanta’s best Champions League showing, but the Bergamo outfit have continued to punch above their weight. Europa League winners in 2024, they reached the Champions League knockout playoffs last season after a club-record 11-game winning streak saw them lead Serie A at Christmas. They also posted their biggest-ever European home (5-0 vs. Sturm Graz) and away (6-1 vs. Young Boys) victories. However, their campaign lost momentum after a disappointing Champions League exit to Club Brugge, and they ultimately finished third in Serie A—still a club-best points tally.

After nine years of unprecedented success, Gian Piero Gasperini stepped down, handing the reins to his former Genoa player Ivan Juric. Juric’s only previous continental experience came during a brief Europa League stint with Roma last season, where he won just one of four matches before Gasperini took over. Juric, looking to prove himself after a difficult spell at Southampton, needed three attempts to secure his first league victory with Atalanta, following draws against Parma and Pisa with a 4-1 win over Lecce on Sunday.
