Rangers have yet to make their first official signing under the guidance of Russell Martin, but a major transfer breakthrough does not appear too far away.
According to TeamTalk, the Ibrox club are “confident” of beating Birmingham City and a host of clubs in the Championship to Peterborough winger Kwane Poku.
The 23-year-old will be out of contract with the Posh at the end of June and will, therefore, be able to sign for the Glasgow giants as a free agent.
Poku is poised to arrive at the club as a replacement for Vaclav Cerny, who will not make a permanent move to Rangers because of the finances involved. He spent last season on loan at the club from Wolfsburg.
What can Rangers fans expect from Poku?
Kwame Poku is primarily a right winger, although he can play across the attacking midfield area. The expectation is that he would fill the spot left by Cerny at Rangers, but how similar is he to the Czech Republic international?
Poku was a strong all-rounder in League One with Peterborough last season, posting above-average scores in all the key areas for a winger. He may have been more of a dribbler than Cerny, but he notably created fewer chances for his team-mates.
A return of 12 goals and nine assists in 27 league matches was a strong return, however.
Kwame Poku vs Vaclav Cerny: 2024/25 league stats
Style comparison: Poku v Saka
Kwame Poku
2024/2025 | League One (ENG)
Right wing (2037 Minutes played)
Bukayo Saka
2024/2025 | Premier League (ENG)
Right wing (1836 Minutes played)
In terms of his style, data analytics firm SciSports indicates that he bears a strong comparison to Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka, though clearly at a lower level. When it comes to players already in the Scottish Premiership, Celtic’s Daizen Maeda is considered a similar player, while he also has attributes that make him more like Nedim Bajrami than Cerny.
Poku promises to be an exciting signing for Rangers, though the signs are that he still needs to be refined to be as effective as Cerny was.
