The Brazilian forward has struggled to win regular first-team football ahead of Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski, despite briefly getting an opportunity soon after Danny Rohl replaced Russell Martin.

Danilo was on target in Sunday’s 3-0 Premiership victory over Dundee, but it may well be that is the last appearance the 26-year-old makes for the Ibrox club.

NEC Nijmegen is are eyeing the former Feyenoord player as a potential reinforcement for their attack, according to De Gelderlander.

Although NEC are targeting a loan move for the forward, the aim will be to sign him on a permanent basis. Danilo has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €6.8 million, which would comfortably make him the club’s record signing.

Financially, it’s a deal that they should be able to afford. Kento Shiogai has been sold to Wolfsburg for €10m.

Rangers, meanwhile, are in a strong negotiating position with the Eredivisie side. Koki Ogawa is currently their only fit centre-forward as Youssef El Kachati is out with a long-term injury, meaning that NEC are desperate for reinforcements.

Danilo’s difficult Rangers career drawing to a close

Danilo has endured a difficult period at Rangers. He was signed from Feyenoord in the summer of 2023 for €6.3m but after making a positive start at the Glasgow giants soon suffered a serious knee problem.

Since returning from injury, he has struggled to win a regular place in the starting XI and has fallen behind both Chermiti and Miovski in Rohl’s thinking.

With Rangers having spent €4.6m to sign Tochi Chukwuani from Sturm Graz and €3.6m on Tuur Rommens from Westerlo, a sizeable fee for the South American would go a long way to help balancing their books.

Danilo is set to leave Ibrox with 16 goals and 11 assists in 76 appearances.
