Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford believes that Manchester United‘s much-talked-about ‘transition’ out of their so-called ‘banter era’ hasn’t even started yet.

The Red Devils have been in an almost constant state of turmoil since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Although Man Utd have continued to win titles like the Europa League and the FA Cup, Premier League success has eluded them.

A host of managers have tried their hand at fixing the club, but all have failed to get Man Utd back on their perch. Erik ten Hag became the latest victim of the managerial graveyard that is Old Trafford when he lost his job last October.

New head coach Ruben Amorim and co-owners INEOS have sought to clean house in recent months in a bid to fix the ‘culture’ at Man Utd, exiling several ‘difficult’ characters such as Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.

Whether these efforts will be rewarded remains to be seen. As for Rashford, he has completed a dream move to Barcelona, albeit only on an initial loan with an option to make his stay permanent next summer.

Rashford: Man Utd need to have a plan

The England international has now spoken to Gary Lineker about his acrimonious exit from his boyhood club and offered an interesting insight into where things have gone wrong since Ferguson’s retirement.

“If your direction’s always changing, you can’t expect to be able to win the league,” Rashford explained. “Yeah, you might win some cup tournaments, but it’s because you do have a good coach and you do have good players and you have match winners in your team – you’re not there by accident.

“This is what some people forget. So yeah, we’ve been way below where we deem United to be. But then if you take a step back, which I’ve been able to do, especially over the last six months, what do you expect? People say we’ve been in a transition for years. To be in a transition, you have to start the transition. So it’s like the actual transition’s not started yet.

“When Liverpool went through this, they got [Jurgen] Klopp, they stuck with him. They didn’t win in the beginning. People only remember his final few years when he was competing with [Man] City and winning the biggest trophies; he certainly didn’t win for three years.

“To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. So this is the thing that I feel is not easy. Because if it’s not going well, the fans demand [change]. But this is where I speak about being realistic with what your situation is.

“I feel like we’ve had that many different managers and different ideas and different strategies in order to win, you end up in no man’s land.”
