Real Madrid seemed set for a historic summer transfer window, with Kylian Mbappe and Alphonso Davies lined up to bolster the club’s already formidable squad.

There has, however, been a hiccup with the Bernabeu side who have “cooled” their interest in Bayern Munich’s Davies, according to a report from TodoFichajes.

The Canada international has been locked in a contract battle with the Bundesliga outfit for many months, resulting in the player’s agent firing shots at the club for putting undue pressure on his client.

Davies’ transfer to Real Madrid seemed inevitable, yet it now appears that the Bernabeu side are prepared to bide their time in this case.

Primarily, there are fears about spending €50-60 million on a player whose contract expires in 2025. Instead, it appears they are willing to wait until Davies is out of contract and sign him on a free transfer, as they will do with Mbappe this summer.

One of the reasons for this has been the rise in prominence of Ferland Mendy in recent weeks. The 28-year-old France international has established himself as Madrid’s primary left-back and his solidarity is appreciated by those at the club.

Mendy preferred to Davies

TodoFichajes states: “Mendy has established himself as one of the players who defends best and dribbles the least, as reflected in the statistics, and thinking about investing a large sum in Davies, many doubts have been raised. And in addition to the Frenchman’s growth, the Canadian has shown a notable or even drastic decline in his game.

“Thinking about spending €50m or €60m to reinforce the left-handed side, the option that is gaining momentum right now and that Jose Angel Sanchez prioritises is the renewal of Mendy, whose contract ends in 2025 and bringing up a player from the reserve team as a substitute, or even pull a central defender if required.

“The Davies option has cooled down a lot.”

Nevertheless, it should not be ruled out that Real Madrid have put this message in the media as a bargaining ploy with Bayern in an attempt to drive down Davies’ transfer fee.
