Los Blancos have been struggling on the pitch this season and it has been in large part due to a terrible injury crisis. Dani Carvajal has torn his ACL, while David Alaba is still recovering from his long-term problem.

More recently, Thibaut Courtois suffered a setback and Aurelien Tchouameni has also been missing through injury. Particularly the defensive departments have been decimated.

An increased burden has thus been put on Antonio Rudiger, himself not always at 100 per cent of late, and Eder Militao, who only recently returned from an ACL tear.

The burden on the latter has seemingly proved too great and Real Madrid are now fearing the worst.

Militao stretchered off against Osasuna

On Saturday, manager Carlo Ancelotti had to watch on as his dwindling numbers were further reduced in a home clash with Osasuna. First, attacker Rodrygo, who had been dealing with a hamstring problem since October, had to come off with a muscular injury.

A mere ten minutes later, disaster struck as Eder Militao went down with a nasty-looking knee issue that gave rise to fears that he has once again suffered ligament damage. The Brazilian had to be stretchered off in agony and will now be assessed by medical staff to determine the extent of his problem.

Captain Lucas Vasquez, who had to make way for Luka Modric at half-time, and Jude Bellingham, who finally scored his first goal of the season, also endured a bruising afternoon. Despite a positive result, Ancelotti’s worries will not have been allayed.

Real Madrid can now only hope that the injuries suffered by Rodrygo and Militao, in particular, are not as serious as they looked at first glance.
