The England international has been heavily linked with a Santiago Bernabeu switch over the past year and reports suggest that he is likely to join Los Blancos on a free transfer this summer.

However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were interested in bringing Alexander-Arnold to the club in January following a potentially season-ending ACL injury suffered by Dani Carvajal.

The Spanish giants are confident that Alexander-Arnold will join the club this year, but they saw a €25 million bid rejected by Liverpool in early January.

Reports indicated that Real Madrid would test the Reds’ resolve by lodging a second offer, but they have now decided to end their interest in bringing Alexander-Arnold to the club this month, as per Marca (via The Daily Mail).

Instead, they are hoping to reach an agreement over a summer transfer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave Liverpool?

Alexander-Arnold has less than six months remaining on his current contract at Liverpool and Arne Slot’s side are locked in negotiations over a possible extension as they look to tie the Englishman down to a new long-term deal.

However, he is now able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club ahead of a transfer this summer. Barcelona and Bayern Munich have been linked with a move for Alexander-Arnold in recent weeks, although Real Madrid are the frontrunners to secure his signature.

The Liverpool academy graduate has made 339 first-team appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals, providing 86 assists and winning eight trophies, including the Champions League in 2019.

In addition to Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also set to become free agents in July, with the former widely tipped to secure a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League when his Liverpool contract expires.
