Record-breaking attendance figures in 2024/25 for German professional football

Attendance and ticketing figures from the 2024/25 season were released today by the DFL, with encouraging numbers seen across the board. 

The 2024/25 season set new records for fan attendance across Germany’s top two football divisions. A total of 20,983,964 tickets were sold by the 36 professional clubs, the highest ever recorded. That figure translates to an average of 34,288 tickets sold per match – the highest average attendance in German professional football history.

In the Bundesliga, 11,653,239 tickets were sold, with an average attendance of 38,082 per game. While slightly down from the 2023/24 season (which recorded 11,925,726 total tickets and an average of 38,973), the drop is largely due to smaller stadium capacities of the promoted clubs Holstein Kiel and FC St. Pauli, compared to relegated sides 1. FC Köln and SV Darmstadt 98.  

Despite this, the Bundesliga’s average stadium occupancy rate rose to 95.91%, up from 95.18% the previous year. Impressively, 15 of the league’s 18 clubs filled over 90% of their stadiums on average.

When compared to other major European leagues, the Bundesliga continues to be a leading figure, surpassing both Serie A (30,811) and La Liga (29,987) in average attendance.

Borussia Dortmund topped the Bundesliga attendance charts once again with an average crowd of over 81,000 at Signal Iduna Park. They were followed by FC Bayern Munich (over 75,000) and VfB Stuttgart (around 56,000).

The 2. Bundesliga also set a new benchmark. Total ticket sales reached 9,330,725, up nearly 6% from the previous season, with an average of 30,493 spectators per match – the highest in the league’s history.

FC Schalke 04 led the division in attendance, drawing over 61,000 fans per game, followed by Hamburger SV with more than 56,000, and Hertha BSC close behind at 51,500.
