Marcel Sabitzer reportedly twisted his knee in the thirty-third minute of Borussia Dortmund’s 0-2 away defeat. The time that he will be missing for Dortmund, and Austria, is unknown, but he will likely be missing their crucial matches.

Borussia Dortmund will be losing midfielder Marcel Sabitzer to a knee injury, according to reports. Sabitzer twisted his knee close to the end of the first half in BVB’s 0-2 defeat to RB Leipzig on Saturday evening.

Sky reports that the injury severity is still to be determined, and that the Dortmund staff did not know at halftime how serious the issue was. Sabitzer will be undergoing an MRI very soon; that will give the staff more of an understanding of how long the Austrian international could be out, and what the next steps will be.

Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl said about the incident, “I cannot say much about it at the moment, except that it was not possible for Sabitzer to continue. And when Sabitzer has to leave, that is typically not a good sign.” Niko Kovač said about the injury that “we will have to wait and see, but he has pain in his knee.”

This comes at a terrible time for Borussia Dortmund, who are currently in the bottom-half of the Bundesliga table while also trying to keep consistency in their Champions League campaign, which continues against FC Barcelona in the quarterfinals.

BVB’s next three matches in the Bundesliga are all against teams currently occupying a Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League spot (Mainz, Freiburg, Bayern). Sabitzer would likely be missing every match mentioned above, as well as the Nations League playoff matches against Serbia later this week.
