Chelsea attempted to poach Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen on Deadline Day, according to a report.
The Blues had a more hectic end to the window than initially anticipated, as Liam Delap’s hamstring injury against Fulham forced them to explore different options to replace the striker.
Chelsea initially ordered Nicolas Jackson to return from Munich, where he had arrived hours earlier to complete his Bayern medical. The Senegal international, however, fought tooth and nail to join the Bundesliga champions, and the Blues eventually gave in.
Bayern renegotiated their deal for Jackson, agreeing to pay an additional €1.5 million on top of their original €15m loan fee, and their €65m purchase option has become a conditional obligation.
With Jackson unwilling to let bygones be bygones after being forced out, Chelsea ultimately decided to recall Marc Guiu from his Sunderland loan – but not before investigating whether a last-minute signing was possible.
Chelsea wanted Strand Larsen
According to Chelsea insider Simon Phillips, the Stamford Bridge club made contact with the representatives of Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen on Sunday to check if there was a deal to be done before the Monday deadline.
Ultimately, there wasn’t enough time to sit down with Wolves and thrash out a deal, especially as the struggling side had maintained all throughout the window that the Norway international wasn’t for sale.
Newcastle previously had several inflated bids for Strand Larsen rejected, so Chelsea would have had to cough up a hugely excessive fee to change Wolves’ stance.
Strand Larsen was keen on a move to Newcastle, and even informed Wolves of his desire to make the move, but he stopped short of actively agitating for a transfer and will now lead the line again for Vitor Pereira’s side after sitting out the Everton clash at the weekend.
