Manchester United face a problem in their pursuit of Juventus defender Gleison Bremer.

Bremer has emerged as United’s top transfer target in recent weeks as they look to revamp their defence ahead of next season.

However, the latest report from Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that they may have to look elsewhere.

The Italian outlet claim that Bremer has a release clause that becomes active in 2025.

The fee is thought to be a fairly reasonable €60 million (£51m), which United could comfortably afford.

However, that would bring plenty of other suitors into play, which could mean that the Red Devils are not the best option for the Brazilian.

Of course, they could pay over the odds to secure his signature this summer, but that would not be a smart decision given that the squad needs an overhaul.

How good is Bremer?

On paper, Bremer – who United scouts have watched in person on a number of occasions in recent months – certainly seems to fit the bill perfectly.

The Brazilian was arguably the best defender in Serie A this season until Juventus’ recent dismal run of form.

Bremer boasts lightning pace, is aggressive, a fantastic presser, and is one of the best defenders in the air in the league. He also reads the game well, intercepting and positioning himself expertly.

These are all qualities that will translate perfectly to the intense Premier League where the level of football will move up a notch from what Bremer faces in Serie A.

However, there is one risk associated with signing Bremer. His breakthrough as a top-class Serie A defender over the past three years has been in a three-man defence.

He has generally been deployed either in the middle or to the left of a three-man centre back pairing.

However, on the rare occasions Juventus have used a back four, Bremer has struggled.

There’s no reason why Bremer can’t adapt to a back four – he certainly has the qualities to do so – but until now there is little proof of him flourishing in that system.
