Manchester United will take to the field against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final next Wednesday, with a string of key transfers on the line.
Man Utd have produced two very different transfer plans for the summer, according to The Independent.
Of course, the Red Devils face two very different futures based on their result against Spurs. Win, and the riches of the Champions League are open to them once again. Defeat, on the other hand, will consign the Old Trafford club to jitters over Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which would suddenly become all the more acute.
Man Utd’s position is not so severe, though, that PSR will block them from making any big transfers should next week’s clash in Bilbao end in defeat.
Two transfers under threat
Matheus Cunha, for example, is expected to arrive at Old Trafford regardless of the outcome of the game, although the Independent does warn that there is still some fear that Arsenal could hijack the deal.
One transfer that is stressed to be dependent on victory is that of Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, who is destined to leave the Cherries this summer. A fee of €70 million would be required to get this move done and raising that fee without the Champions League is seen as incredibly difficult.
There is less clarity over what chance United have of landing Liam Delap should they fail to qualify for the Champions League. While his release fee of €36m from Ipswich is unlikely to be a problem, rivals Newcastle and Chelsea may both be able to offer the young centre-forward football at the highest level.
Man Utd CEO Jason Wilcox is thought to have a link with Delap during the pair’s time at the Etihad, which may give the Red Devils a crucial edge in this race.
