Based on factors such as ball recoveries and aerial duels won, Rodri is ranked as the best No 6, with Brighton’s Pascal Gross second, Alexis Mac Allister third, Jorginho fourth and Yves Bissouma fifth.

The City midfielder is also ranked the best No 8 in the league ahead of second-placed Mac Allister again, James Maddison, Bruno Guimaraes and Ross Barkley.

Rodri drops down to fifth spot for the best No10s this season but the fact that he makes the list will come as a surprise.

Manchester City team-mate Phil Foden takes the crown for the best in that role, also ahead of Kevin De Bruyne, Martin Odegaard and  Eberechi Eze.

Rodri has been involved in 47 games for club and country this season and he was animated recently as he suggested that it was time for him to sit a game out as City’s fixture list piles up.

Guardiola claimed he is yet to decide whether that will be afforded to him against Luton this weekend.

‘I didn’t speak with Rodri but if he needs a rest he will have rest. Or no. I don’t know. I have the feeling that the games when he was tired like against Crystal Palace and Madrid, he was better in the second half.

‘He runs more and was more precise in the second half than the first. More than the physicality, it is a case of expending mental energy. Playing every three days, three days.

‘Of course he’s tired, playing a lot of minutes. Rodri is so important for us and we’ll decide tomorrow what we have to do.’
