REVEALED: What Van Dijk really told PSG

Liverpool’s exit from the Champions League was marked with the sight of Virgil van Dijk chatting casually to PSG’s president and sporting director at Anfield after the game.

Van Dijk is out of contract at the end of the season and is free to open contract talks with any club he chooses, so naturally there was some suspicion that the groundwork may have been getting laid for a potential summer move.

The 33-year-old was seen talking to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos for some time after the match. Indeed, he even shared a hug with the Qatari, who he is said to have a long-standing respect for.

Now the content of the conversation has been revealed by RMC, which confirms that the Netherlands international defender was indeed being highly complimentary to the Ligue 1 leaders.

What did Van Dijk tell PSG?

Van Dijk was quick to apologise for an outburst that had been caught on camera at half-time in the first leg.

Campos was furious that Ibrahima Konate had not been sent off for a push on Bradley Barcola when the winger was clear through on goal, to which the Dutchman had replied: “This isn’t Ligue 1.”

That controversy now appears to have been cleared up.

Van Dijk also expressed his admiration for the level that PSG showed during the match.

“He explained that PSG are not only the best team that he has faced this season, but they are also the best team he has played in the last three years,” RMC reports.

Finally, Van Dijk and the directors of the Parisians also discussed certain situations that arose during the match. It is said that the conversation was “particularly appreciated” by the PSG management team.

So there were no contract talks, but the mutual respect between the parties is certainly there.
