Rio Ferdinand has named the Premier League club he would ‘love’ Jose Mourinho to manage after he was sacked by Roma.

Mourinho was dismissed by Roma last week, with the Italian side languishing ninth in Serie A after a disappointing start to their campaign.

The 60-year-old coach has reportedly turned down an offer to take charge of Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab as he looks to make a return to management.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five podcast, Ferdinand joined the speculation over Mourinho’s next destination.

The former Man United defender dismissed the suggestion Mourinho could succeed Gareth Southgate as England boss, as well as questioning whether he could return for a third spell in charge of Chelsea.

Ferdinand revealed he would ‘love’ to see Mourinho take charge of Newcastle as the Magpies seek to challenge the Premier League’s elite under their Saudi ownership.

He admitted that he would not want to see current Newcastle boss Eddie Howe sacked, stressing the 46-year-old had done an ‘unreal’ job at the club.

‘I don’t think the FA hire a Jose Mourinho, I would, but I don’t think the FA are going from Gareth Southgate to Mourinho,’ Ferdinand said.

‘That is too big of a difference in character and personality. That’s like ready salted to vindaloo, it’s not happening.

‘Chelsea, Mourinho, no chance. They would be going backwards and these Americans don’t go backwards like that.

‘I would love to see Jose back there. I hope Jose gets the job if Pochettino doesn’t do well, but I think they will stay with Pochettino.

‘If he doesn’t go to Chelsea where does he go? Newcastle, I would love to see him there.

‘But Eddie Howe, he’s been unreal. He has done too well, I wouldn’t want to see him go.’

Mourinho has already managed Chelsea on two occasions, as well as managing their rivals Man United and Tottenham in the Premier League.

The Portuguese coach had been strongly linked to ex-Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson.

Mourinho began his coaching career under the iconic boss at both Porto and Sporting Lisbon, working initially as a translator before becoming his assistant.

Reports earlier this week claimed Mourinho is keen to take a break from managing after being sacked by Roma, who he led to the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022.
