Rio Ferdinand says teams now have ‘no respect’ when going to Old Trafford as Manchester United were condemned to a fifth home league defeat in six by Crystal Palace.
The Eagles ran out 2-0 victors against Ruben Amorim‘s struggling side, with a Jean-Philippe Mateta brace sealing United’s fate in another morbid outing.
Languishing in 13th in the Premier League table, Sunday’s display showed little sign of improvement from previous defeats at home, with fans forced to relive the ignominy already experienced against the likes of Brighton, Newcastle and Bournemouth this season.
Once a fortress feared by all opposition, United legend Ferdinand took to YouTube after the game to lament the current state of affairs at his former club.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, he said: ‘Is anyone really surprised? I think this is just where we are right now. I’m not sitting here in complete shock – it’s so weird to think that I’ve just come to expect that we could lose this game.
‘Man United, we lose again today at home. Teams are now going to Old Trafford with no respect, man. No respect whatsoever.
Man United suffered their fifth home league defeat in six as Crystal Palace took all three points

Jean-Philippe Mateta bagged an impressive second-half brace to seal Man United’s fate

Ruben Amorim opted not to field a natural striker, instead playing Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine
‘The manager needs to find a way of getting his team through this period. He needs to find a way of finding some positives in some games.
‘The team don’t seem to be able to play football properly with the ball. We’ve got no real idea or patterns at the moment since the manager’s come in.’
One of the major talking points from the contest came from Amorim’s team selection, opting to leave out both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund and instead field Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine.
Indicative of Amorim’s frustration with his forward options, Ferdinand wonders where this will leave the two strikers going into the second half of the season.
The pair may also be about to fall further out of favour under the Portuguese boss, with Man United reportedly closing in on a move for wantaway Bayern Munich frontman Mathys Tel.
‘Kobbie playing up front, another new variation of tactics from the manager,’ Ferdinand said, reflecting on Amorim’s change in personnel.
‘There’s two strikers – where does that leave Zirkzee and Hojlund? I see that we’re in the market for the young Bayern Munich striker (Tel) now. He’s a great talent but do we need another young one?
‘Maybe we do, the manager maybe sees that we’re in the market to get him. But when you play Kobbie so high, Bruno has to play even deeper. Then we lack that real threat. We weren’t really a threat today.’
