Rob McElhenney’s half-time message backfires as Wrexham thrashed as ex-Barca ace scores

Wrexham were destroyed 5-0 at home by Stockport on Saturday as Rob McElhenney’s half-time message backfired spectacularly.

The Dragons were promoted to League Two last season after a nail-biting finale in scenes only seen in Hollywood films.

And for A-lister owners Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney, the whole football malarkey must have looked like a piece of cake.

But Saturday was yet another sobering moment for Wrexham after being thrashed 5-0 at home by Stockport.

The Welsh side found themselves 3-0 down at half-time before McElhenney tried to help his side get back into the match, from social media.

He tweeted, referring to manager Phil Parkinson: “Phil’s enthusiasm in the locker room will be off the charts.

“But never, ever leave a Wrexham game. Come on you reds!”

And he was right, in the wrong way, as Wrexham went on to concede a further two goals – including one in the 90th minute.

Isaac Olaofe grabbed a hat-trick in the process while there was a goal for Louie Barry, as well.

The 20-year-old has had quite the upbringing in football after starring for Barcelona’s academy at the age of 16.

He joined the Blaugrana’s youth set-up after leaving West Brom in 2019, spending a year in Catalonia.

But a return to Birmingham beckoned as Villa snapped him up in 2020, where he has been loaned out five times.

This stint away, though, has reaped massive awards after starting life in League Two in fantastic form after joining Stockport on loan in the summer.

The youngster has scored in six consecutive games for the Hatters, as well as adding two assists.

Wrexham, meanwhile, have had tough days in League Two but find themselves still seventh in the table.

They have high ambitions of landing back-to-back promotions to take them to League One and have former Premier League stars James McClean and Steven Fletcher among their ranks.
