Roma are reportedly prepared to sack Jose Mourinho if his side fail to defeat Cagliari this weekend.

After leading the Giallorossi to successive European finals during his first two seasons at the Stadio Olimpico, The Special One has endured a much slower start to the current campaign, with his side currently sitting 13th in Serie A.

The club travel to the Sardegna Arena to face a Cagliari side managed by fellow former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri on Sunday, in a clash that could reportedly prove decisive in his tenure.

According to a report from Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, club president Dan Friedkin is ready to sack Mourinho if he is unable to lead Roma to victory against the newly-promoted club.

The report also suggests that Roma have already earmarked a successor for Mourinho should he be axed before next week’s international break.

Former Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick is said to be Friedkin’s first choice to lead the club if they opt to part ways with Mourinho after two years in the dugout.

Flick has been linked with a number of clubs since becoming the first manager in the history of the German national team to be sacked after his side suffered three consecutive defeats, punctuated by a 4-1 loss to Japan in a friendly earlier this month.

However, despite Roma’s faltering start to the campaign, any decision to part ways with Mourinho would no doubt prove divisive with the club’s faithful.

In his first season in charge Mourinho ended a more than half century wait for a European trophy at the club with victory over Feyenoord in the 2022 Europa Conference League final.

Then, last season the club reached the final of the Europa League for just the second time in their history before losing on penalties to Sevilla.

The former Man United boss recently revealed he turned down the chance to take over at Saudi side Al-Hilal this summer, knocking back reportedly the most lucrative contract ever offered to a manager, said to be worth £26m a year.
