AS Roma will likely have to resort to painful player sales to plug their €90 million Financial Fair Play hole.
The Serie A giants have managed to slim down their deficits since the Friedkins took charge of the club in 2020, but the Giallorossi remain in a precarious financial position.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma are currently €90 million short of being able to comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations, which permits losses of up to €60m over a three-year period.
Roma have until next June to raise the required €90m. These funds can be attained through various means, ranging from matchday and TV revenue to competition prize money and sponsorship deals.
Securing a new shirt sponsor after losing their €12m Riyadh Season deal will be a boon, while going deep in the Europa League and placing well in Serie A would also provide welcome funds.
Roma could be forced to sell players
However, if all else fails, Roma will have to resort to selling players in January and before 30 June next summer. Already this year, midfielder Manu Kone was linked with a move to Inter due to the club’s economic difficulties.
The Friedkins ultimately stepped in to block this deal, but he is one player who will be of interest to suitors in the next two transfer windows. He is by quite some distance Roma’s most valuable player with an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €43.2m.
Kone has become a regular in the senior France team and is bound to secure a lucrative move in 2026, potentially to the Premier League, where he has had admirers for years, with Arsenal and Liverpool previously keeping tabs on him.
Another player who has been arousing interest is Matias Soule. The 22-year-old winger has an ETV of €34.7m and notched five goals and five assists last term. The tricky Argentine has scored once so far this season.
Striker Artem Dovbyk is also among Roma’s most valuable players despite his hit-and-miss form for the Giallorossi. He was being linked with a Premier League move in the summer, while a swap deal for AC Milan’s Santiago Gimenez was also explored.
In the backline, Evan Ndicka is likely to be among the club’s most sought-after players. Reports repeatedly suggested that Roma were already open to offers for him in this year’s windows due to their financial problems, and the likes of Arsenal and Man Utd were supposedly interested.
