Fabrizio Romano has revealed that there will be at least one new face in Ruben Amorim’s squad for beginning of 2026.

The Red Devils have been linked with numerous top-class midfielders, a central defender and a new left-back to replace Patrick Dorgu, but their first piece of business will be to recall an academy prospect from loan.

Romano has announced that midfielder Toby Collyer has been recalled from West Brom after a frustrating loan spell with the Championship club.

The 21-year-old moved to WBA in the middle of August but made only three starts for the club and failed to play 90 minutes even once.

Injury was a major factor in his troubles. He was twice taken off injured after being named in the starting XI and so was unable to get up to full speed. A calf injury sustained in a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City on 26 November proved to be his final game for the club.

“Collyer has already returned to Carrington for treatment and the club has now decided he won’t be heading back once he recovers,” Romano reports.

Amorim ‘toying’ with adding Collyer to first-team squad

Man Utd want to take a closer look at Collyer in the next few weeks and will not necessarily loan him out again, The Sun reports.

He has already played 13 times for Man Utd’s first team and Amorim is said to be “toying” with the idea of retaining him for the second half of the season with a view to providing backup in a midfield area that has been left short of numbers this season.

Both Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo are currently sidelined for the Red Devils, leaving them desperately short of bodies in the centre of the field.

Collyer could provide additional cover in this regard, though equally United will want to balance this against his development, with the 21-year-old still coveted by a number of Championship clubs.
