Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Ferland Mendy‘s future at Real Madrid is uncertain.

Prior to this season, the French left-back had not had a particularly distinguished Los Blancos career, but his fortunes have massively improved now. Mendy has been a fairly regular fixture in Carlo Ancelotti’s side this term, and the Italian coach has not shied away from showering the 28-year-old with praise.

Ancelotti raised eyebrows when he said that Mendy was the best defensive left-back in the world, a statement he recently reiterated ahead of Real Madrid’s controversial El Clasico victory over Barcelona, in which the defender did not feature. It was a particularly interesting quote in light of the LaLiga giants’ much-publicised pursuit of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.

Indeed, it seems that despite Ancelotti’s praise for the Frenchman, Mendy’s future at Real is anything but set in stone. In fact, it is entirely possible that he will depart the club this summer, with his contract set to expire next year.

Romano on Mendy’s future

Mendy’s improved performances, his uncertain contract situation and Real’s Davies chase have all contributed to increased speculation surrounding the player’s next step. In recent times, French media has begun linking Mendy to the likes of Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool, with the former two particularly keen on adding a left-back this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, it is true that Mendy could depart the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, though it is too early to say for sure as not even Real Madrid know what to do with him yet.

L’Equipe have linked Mendy with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, but my understanding is that his future is still open – he could be sold or he could even sign a contract extension,” Romano told CaughtOffside.

“Still, Real Madrid can’t enter the new season with Mendy, Fran Garcia and also Davies. So obviously, if they sign Davies it is because a left-back has to leave. Let’s see if it’s Mendy or not. Real Madrid would only sign Davies now if they sell a left-back.”
