Ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s 4–2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund over the weekend, Xabi Alonso confirmed he will step down as head coach at the end of the season.
The Spaniard has long been linked with a return to Real Madrid, who he represented as a player.
And according to Italian transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano, a full agreement is now in place for Alonso to take over as Real Madrid coach on a contract running until 2028.
The 43-year-old is set to replace Carlo Ancelotti and, according to the report, will assume his new role ahead of this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.
Alonso took charge of Leverkusen in October 2022 and guided the club to a historic domestic double last season.
Regardless of their result against Mainz this weekend, Die Werkself will finish second in the Bundesliga this season, behind already-crowned champions Bayern Munich.
