Not long after VfL Wolfsburg knocked two-time-defending DFB-Pokal champions Leipzig out of Germany’s domestic cup, Marco Rose’s German Red Bulls once again had to contend with a defeat against Germany’s green company team. Leipzig incurred their third loss of the season Saturday at the Volkswagen Arena. Despite topping their opponents (3.72 to 0.86), the Saxons both lost and saw Dortmund overtake them for a place in the Bundesliga’s top-four.
Rose declared himself “exceptionally disappointed” in his post-match interview with Sky Germany. Starting attacker Christoph Baumgartner – in fabulous form for both club and country – also referenced Leipzig’s superior play. Rose made sure to stress that there could ultimately be no excuses. Baumgartner referenced the strong play of VfL keeper Koen Casteels, who recovered from a very poor match against Gladbach to make several critical stops.
“It’s important that we don’t chalk it up to bad luck in the end,” Rose remarked in his interview, “One always has time over 90 minutes to rectify matters and steer them in one’s direction. When one did as much as we did right today, generated so many chances, and allowed very little defensively, it makes one angry when one still has to depart the pitch as losers.”
“He’s one of the best keepers in the Bundesliga,” Baumgartner said of Wolfsburg’s Belgian keeper, sure to be a sought-after-commodity in the summer transfer market, “Today he showed why he starts for country. Of course, he was the key for Wolfsburg today. If you look at the game over the course of 90 minutes, we were the dominant team; the team that had more of the game.”
“But at the end of the day, we didn’t achieve the breakthrough,” Baumgartner continued, “We were often in the opponent’s final third, but the big chances were 100 percent missing. That’s why it’s a bitter defeat. We wanted to take three points today in order to emerge from the international break in good shape. We know what the table looks like now, but we’ll move on quickly and fight back.”
