Manchester United have sent a clear message about their approach for whoever replaces Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford following his sacking
Manchester United are on the hunt for a new manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. However, the incoming boss at Old Trafford may have to contend with the fact that no funds will be available for transfers in January.
Darren Fletcher will take the reins for United’s upcoming match against Burnley as CEO Omar Berrada and Sporting Director Jason Wilcox devise a fresh strategy for the club’s future. Prior to his departure, it seemed that Amorim was no longer in sync with United’s top brass, expressing frustration over his role after the stalemate with Leeds.
The Portuguese showed dissatisfaction with merely being a coach, insisting he was the ‘manager’. Despite this, as stated in the announcement of his dismissal, Amorim did hold the position of head coach.
Tensions came to a head in a dramatic press conference on Sunday, following hints of discontent in the lead-up. Amorim appeared to be frustrated by the lack of action planned for the January transfer window, a situation that could also affect United’s next manager.
“The transfer window is not going to change,” Amorim declared last week. “We have no conversation to have any change in the squad. There’s a process, there’s an idea – that’s going to continue.

“We are near places of the Champions League, but we are also near eight teams behind us.”
Amorim also pointed out that he wouldn’t be given the resources needed to implement his preferred style of play.
“I have the feeling if we have to play our perfect 3-4-3, that we need to spend a lot of money and we need time,” he said. “I’m starting to understand that’s not going to happen. So, maybe now I have to adapt.”
The person stepping into Amorim’s shoes will apparently be tasked with bettering his achievements without any significant first-team signings. Reports that United could appoint an interim manager until the end of the season before bringing in a permanent replacement in the summer seems to back this up, with the club set to make specific signings in the summer for whoever comes in.
The club’s announcement of Amorim’s departure emphasised that the decision was driven by the ambition to secure the highest possible Premier League position.
Currently, United are sixth in the league, trailing fourth-placed Liverpool by three points.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” read the club’s statement. “This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
