Ruben Amorim has joined the tributes to Kath Phipps, the hugely popular Manchester United stalwart who passed away at the age of 85 earlier this week.

United stars past and present have taken to social media to express their feelings for the lifelong United fan from Irlam who worked at the club for more than 55 years, starting as a switchboard operator shortly after the Busby Babes won the European Cup in 1968.

Amorim has only been at the club for a short while but said that he still remembers meeting Kath in reception at Carrington when he spent a week studying United in 2017 during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge.

‘Yeah, you feel it today, it’s a sad day,’ he said. ‘Everybody talks about lady Kathy. I met her seven years ago during the internship, she was the lady behind the reception.

‘And you feel it, the love, the way Darren Fletcher speaks about her. She was a really important person here that represents everything about this club; friendly, professional, taking care of everybody. It’s a sad day.’

David Beckham posted a touching tribute on Thursday night and Wayne Rooney described Kath as ‘the heart and soul of Manchester United’, adding: ‘Everything what the club is about. A legend who will be greatly missed. Thanks for the memories Kathy.’

Kath had a number of roles but was best known for her welcoming presence at the Old Trafford directors’ entrance and as a receptionist at Carrington where she was beloved by managers and players for almost a quarter of a century.

Marcus Rashford posted on social media: ‘Awful news, admired by all at the club and beyond, you will be missed.’ Teammate Diogo Dalot added: ‘We love you Kath. Thank you for showing everyday what this club is about and taking care of us.’
