Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has confirmed that he will not change his football philosophy amid rumours that he could be sacked by the Red Devils.

The Old Trafford outfit succumbed to a 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon and rumours that Amorim could be fired have intensified as Man Utd stare down the barrel of yet another disappointing campaign.

The Red Devils are languishing down in 14th place in the Premier League table, having picked up just four points from their opening four fixtures, while they have only scored two open-play goals, despite spending €225.7 million on attacking reinforcements over the summer.

In addition, Man Utd have accrued the lowest points tally of any ever-present English top flight club since Amorim was appointed last November (31).

Amorim’s reluctance to move away from his preferred 3-4-3 system has angered fans, and he is now second-favourite to become the next sacked manager in the Premier League – behind only Graham Potter of West Ham United.

Following the defeat to Man City, Amorim told reporters: “Guys, I understand that and I accept. It is not a record you should have in Manchester United. There are a lot of things – you have no idea what happened during these months – but I accept that. I am not going to change.

“When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man. We will talk about that every game that we lose. I don’t believe in that, in the system, or whatever. I believe in my way and I am going to play my way until I want to change.

“My message is that I am going to give everything. I will do everything, always thinking about what is best for the club. That was always the same message. It is not my decision, the rest [on whether United change manager]. Until I am here, I will do my best. I really want to win games. I am suffering more than them.”

Benfica eye Ruben Amorim

If Amorim is sacked by Man Utd in the next few weeks, Portuguese giants Benfica will be ready to pursue his signature, according to Fichajes.

He played for the club for nine years during his career and although Amorim cemented his managerial reputation at their arch-rivals Sporting CP, Benfica would reportedly be interested in appointing him as their new head coach if he is sacked by Man Utd.
