Ruud van Nistelrooy jokes that he is still waiting for Ruben Amorim to text him having been appointed Man United boss as he refuses to be drawn on his own Old Trafford future

Ruud van Nistelrooy joked that he is still waiting for a text from incoming boss Ruben Amorim after he made it three games unbeaten as interim boss.

The Dutchman masterminded Manchester United‘s first win in Europe in more than a year, with his decision to start Amad Diallo proving inspired as his brace defeated PAOK.

Van Nistelrooy will round off his four-game spell in charge as interim boss on Sunday against Leicester, with his future at the club remaining up in the air as he waits to hear from Amorim.

‘Ruben is focusing on Braga and I focus on Leicester,’ he said. ‘That’s a great one for now and it shows that we are focused on the day by day job and getting the maximum out of the team.

‘Let him focus on Braga and I focus on Leicester and we’ll see after that. I’ve got to check my phone now [to see if he has messaged]… I will do so later.’

Amorim will take over the Red Devils from Monday, with van Nistelrooy’s future still unclear

Pressed on whether he wants to stay involved at Old Trafford after thriving as manager, he said: ‘I’m only busy with one thing in my mind. I want my last game as an interim, I want to prepare it as good as I can and give the players everything they need to get the best performance out of them and hopefully three important points.

‘That is my absolute focus and other than that I don’t look too far ahead to be really honest. It’s too important.’

Players are responding to Van Nistelrooy and are keen for him to remain part of Amorim’s staff once the Portuguese starts work officially on Monday.

‘He has so much experience and he has done amazing since he has been here,’ Onana said of his stand-in boss.

‘We’ve had him for a few days as a head coach and the players are happy but it’s not something we can decide.

‘The club made a decision and we have to accept because they have the final decision.’
