Ruud Van Nistelrooy insists his future at Manchester United ‘remains open’ and he was not treating his emotional send-off in front of the Stretford End as goodbye after his time as interim boss came to a close.

Van Nistelrooy rounded off his four-game spell in charge with a 3-0 win over Leicester City, taking him to three wins and a draw since stepping up after Erik ten Hag’s sacking.

Fans in the Stretford End sang his name loudly and he received a standing ovation as he made his way off the pitch and down the tunnel for what could be the final time.

He has remained tight-lipped as to whether he will become part of the furniture under incoming boss Ruben Amorim but when pressed on Sunday about what comes next, he wouldn’t be drawn.

‘I can only describe that moment, how I felt and as a closure of this block of four games, it felt like a closure for that period and the future is open,’ he said.

‘That is the way I felt it. It was a beautiful moment to be able to share that with the supporters and, yeah, it was special.’

Pressed on whether he believes his time at the club is over and it was a goodbye to the fans, he added: ‘No, I felt like closing this period down and it was a moment, here and now, and that was the beauty of the moment and where circumstances came together.

‘It was a beautiful moment, gratitude from my side to them and the reception I was able to receive was unbelievable.’

Many of United’s players have taken their game up a level since Van Nistelrooy took charge and while he believes more is to come, he feels he has fulfilled his duty by bringing stability to a club that was in crisis under Ten Hag.

‘With three wins and a draw it’s a standard where you want to grow to as a club.’
