Former Milan and Italy head coach Arrigo Sacchi has weighed in on Inter’s upcoming Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich, and has recommended a winning strategy for Simone Inzaghi to deploy for Wednesday night’s decider in San Siro.

The Nerazzurri currently have a 2-1 lead in the tie thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez and Davide Frattesi in Bavaria last Tuesday, but have a long way to go before a spot in the semi-final is secured.

Sacchi tells Inter how to beat Bayern: Attack the best form of defence?

Inter boast the best defensive record in the 2024-25 edition of the Champions League, with just three conceded across their 10 games in the tournament so far, but Sacchi believes that attack will be the best form of defence against the Bundesliga giants.

Sacchi suggests that major European teams in the Champions League tend to focus more on the attacking side of the game compared to the defensive, which he thinks means that Bayern will leave space in behind and opportunities for the Nerazzurri to attack.

“Looking back at the first leg, a more attacking attitude would be desired,” Sacchi wrote in his La Gazzetta dello Sport column.

“But, I believe that the Nerazzurri should not get caught out by the Germans’ possession. In San Siro, you don’t get past, and attack is often the best way to defend.

“Inter are going through a strong period, they showed in on Saturday against Cagliari. They dominate opponents, they play a good game, they defend well and attack with numbers. Unlike the other teams in the Champions League, the Nerazzurri have an advantage: They protect their goal better than anyone else.

“Foreign teams, on the other hand, and I include Barcelona in this – a possible upcoming opponent, are more unstable. They work a lot on the defensive aspect, but they are not as attentive as they should be when they don’t have the ball. Inter must exploit this advantage to the full.”
