Mohamed Salah sparked joy around Liverpool on Wednesday when an image of the superstar at the city’s Albert Docks appeared on social media in a sign that was interpreted as the attacker committing his future to the club. The truth behind the picture has now been revealed.

Salah is out of contract at the end of the season and could therefore leave Liverpool as a free agent.

While the Saudi Pro League is said to be confident of landing the 33-year-old for Al-Hilal in what would be a massive coup of the big-spending division, there has been a more recent tendency for the Egypt international star to remain with the Anfield club.

This was fuelled by the image of Salah posing at the Albert Docks in Liverpool gear, with fans hoping that an official announcement on his contract could be imminent as the Reds close in on the Premier League title.

This is not likely, according to The Athletic, but discussions between Salah and the Anfield board are ongoing.

It reports: “The picture was completely unrelated to his contract situation, that has his current deal expiring at the end of the season. The photo was taken on Monday, when Salah attended a player appearance for one of the club’s commercial partners. Discussions over a contract extension are ongoing with the hope a suitable compromise can be reached.”

The Salah image appeared just as a report emerged that the Liverpool star has reached a “full agreement” with the club over a new contract.

No details on the salary have been announced, but the Egyptian is very close to getting what he’s wanted for several months,” FootMercato reports.

Even if the Albert Dock image is not related to Salah signing a new Liverpool deal, it appears increasingly likely that he’s going nowhere.
