Jadon Sancho is expected to leave Manchester United on a permanent deal this summer, but the Englishman is reportedly open to returning next season if Erik ten Hag is sacked.

The Dutchman is under pressure at Old Trafford following a disappointing 2023-24 campaign and he remains at risk of being replaced at the helm. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team haven’t been impressed by Ten Hag’s recruitment since he was appointed in 2022 and his future at the club is uncertain.

FootballTransfers understands that Brentford boss Thomas Frank is an option for Man Utd, while Gareth Southgate is not currently being considered, despite being linked with the job.

Ten Hag had a public bust-up with Sancho back in September, following his omission from the matchday squad against Arsenal, and the former England international was subsequently frozen out of the Man Utd first-team squad before being loaned to Borussia Dortmund in January.

Sancho had spent four years at the Bundesliga club before leaving to join Man Utd for €85 million in 2021. Since returning to the Signal Iduna Park, the Englishman has racked up two goals and two assists in 13 games.

He has been tipped to re-sign for Dortmund permanently, but iNews have reported that Sancho would be open to the idea of returning to Man Utd this summer if Ten Hag is sacked and a new manager arrives.

‘Jadon Sancho should stay at Borussia Dortmund’

Although Sancho is reportedly open to a Man Utd return, German football legend Lothar Matthaus believes he should re-join Dortmund on a permanent deal.

“We are happy to have him back. He wrote a good story the first time with Borussia Dortmund,” Matthaus told FootballTransfers.

“You can see it, he needs time like any other player when you miss one year. [Joining] Man Utd was not the best decision, it was not good for the player or good for Man Utd. Now he is in a good way, he is in a rhythm, he scored his first goal since coming back.

“I hope his story is not over and that in two months he will sign for Borussia Dortmund. I wish it for him, I wish it for Dortmund. I have this feeling he is very happy after this adventure with Man Utd.

“He does a really good job. The fans like him, the coach connects with him, and I think he can give Borussia Dortmund the quality back that they were missing.”
