SC Freiburg return to the Europa-Park Stadion this weekend looking to strengthen their excellent home record and continue their push up the Bundesliga table. Standing in their way is a Borussia Mönchengladbach side still searching for consistency and battling injury setbacks ahead of Sunday’s clash.

Current standings and run of form

Freiburg head into this match buoyed by their formidable home performances this season. The Breisgau club are currently enjoying what has been described as a “generational home run,” underlining their strength in front of their own supporters. 7 wins, 3 draws and only 1 defeat (which happened on the first matchday) – going to Freiburg this season usually means losing some points!

Despite that impressive record, Freiburg themselves are looking to bounce back after suffering a 3-0 defeat in their most recent Bundesliga outing against Hoffenheim. Their overall trajectory, however, remains positive, and they will view this fixture as an opportunity to quickly return to winning ways.

Borussia Mönchengladbach, meanwhile, are enduring a far more difficult campaign. They have struggled for consistency and results, contributing to a disappointing league position (14th). Like Freiburg, Gladbach were beaten 3-0 in their last match against Frankfurt and now face mounting pressure to improve their form – they have been winless since the 11th of January!

The visitors’ struggles are particularly evident in attack, with injuries compounding their issues and limiting their effectiveness in the final third.

History between the two sides

Recent history suggests Freiburg have had the upper hand in this fixture. Across 49 competitive meetings, Freiburg have claimed 18 victories compared to Gladbach’s 13 wins, with the remainder ending in draws.

At the Europa-Park Stadion specifically, Freiburg have been even more dominant, winning 13 of their 24 home meetings against Gladbach.

Encouragingly for the hosts, Freiburg have also won three of their last four encounters with Gladbach, further strengthening their psychological advantage heading into this weekend’s clash. Their most recent matchup was a 0-0 draw – a result both teams would like to avoid this time around.

Squad news

SC Freiburg

Freiburg have relatively few injury concerns but will be without one defensive option: Max Rosenfelder – he’s suffering from a thigh injury and is expected to miss the match after a recent setback. Otherwise, Freiburg are expected to have most of their key players available.

Borussia Mönchengladbach

Gladbach’s injury and suspension list is significantly longer, particularly affecting their attacking options:

  • Giovanni Reyna – muscular injury, back in training but not ready to return.
  • Robin Hack – knee injury.
  • Tim Kleindienst – knee injury.
  • Nathan Ngoumou – achilles tendon injury.
  • Rocco Reitz – suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card.

These absences significantly weaken Gladbach’s attacking depth and midfield balance ahead of this challenging away fixture.

Predicted lineups

SC Freiburg (4-2-3-1):

Atubolu – Treu, Ginter, Ogbus, Günter – Eggestein, Osterhage – Beste, Suzuki, Grifo – Matanović

Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-5-2)

Nicolas – Scally, Elvedi, Diks – Castrop, Engelhardt, Stöger, Bolin, Ullrich – Honorat, Tabaković
