Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay is edging closer to signing a contract extension at the club, despite reported interest from former club Manchester United.
The Scotland international, whose current deal with the Serie A giants is due to expire in 2028, has enjoyed a hugely successful stint at Napoli, scoring 23 goals and providing 10 assists in 70 appearances for the club.
His exploits during his debut campaign at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium earned him a nomination for the 2025 Ballon d’Or and several Premier League clubs are interested in bringing him back to England this year.
However, Italian journalist Nicolo Schira has now confirmed that McTominay is in advanced talks over a new contract with Napoli. It’s reported that negotiations are progressing nicely and he is set to sign a deal valid until 2030 with an option for a further 12 months.
The 29-year-old has reportedly received approaches from clubs in the Premier league and Saudi Arabia, but his priority is staying at Napoli.
Speaking to talkSPORT in early February, Napoli’s global business development officer Leonardo Giammarioli admitted: “Of course I’m worried [that McTominay could leave].
“But ultimately, especially Scott, who’s a very nice guy, we’re happy if he gets to the next level in a couple of years – maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it.
“Look at Stuttgart, they wanted to keep Nick Woltemade, but when such an offer comes in, there’s not much you can do, when the player wants to go and money is important.”
However, McTominay reportedly looks set to pen fresh terms in Naples, rather than depart the club this summer.
Scott McTominay expected to sign new Napoli contract
With a move for McTominay unlikely to take place during the 2026 summer transfer window, Man Utd will be forced to pursue an alternative target amid their bid to land a suitable replacement for the departing Casemiro.
England duo Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton have both been heavily linked with an Old Trafford switch in recent weeks, while the Red Devils are also interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes.
The club could even be forced to sign two new midfielders this summer, with Manuel Ugarte tipped to depart after struggling since his arrival from Paris Saint-Germain.
