Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has responded to suggestions that he could come back to haunt boyhood club Manchester United by making a move to the Premier League.
The Scotland international has been a star performer for Napoli since joining the club from the Red Devils in the summer of 2024. Man Utd had to reluctantly cash in on their academy graduate to comply with financial regulations.
The 28-year-old instantly became a fan favourite in Naples, playing a vitally important role in their 2024/25 Scudetto win. After being named Serie A’s Player of the Season, McTominay finished in an impressive 18th place in this year’s Ballon d’Or rankings.
Like many stars in recent years, the midfielder has been thriving away from Old Trafford, although there have been suggestions that he could make a return to England soon.
Due to his solid performances, Premier League clubs are said to have taken a keen interest in McTominay. On Tuesday, he was linked with a shock move to Tottenham.
McTominay responds to transfer rumours
However, it was already acknowledged in the report that it would be difficult to prise him away from Italy. Not only is McTominay content in Naples, but club chiefs also have no intention of letting him go.
A January transfer was categorically ruled out, not least because Napoli actually want to strengthen their midfield department in the winter, not weaken it. Fellow Man Utd academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo is the preferred target, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.
It was claimed that McTominay could be tempted by the right project in the summer, but the Scotsman has now seemingly dismissed suggestions of a departure from Napoli.
AreaNapoli has today published a quote from the midfielder, which he is said to have given to Sky Sports when quizzed about the recent speculation. I’m really happy at Napoli,” McTominay bluntly said, presumably after Napoli beat Lecce 1-0 on Tuesday evening.
